Is he a regular killjoy, or just a natural part of the Brooklyn street ecosystem? Pastoralia writes on the Park Slope Message Board at Brooklynian.com:

Has anyone seen this guy? He’s white, got a slight build, knobby knees, usually wearing a large gardener’s hat?

This past weekend I was walking back from the gym and he was going to every street post and tearing down people’s Stoop Sale signs. What’s the deal? I was going to confront him but I was already late and he has the sort of weasely little face that makes you immediately dislike him. He walked up 7th street between 6th and 7th Ave. I’m not sure if he lives there or was off to rip down other people’s signs.

And these were for stoop sales that were currently happening… this really pisses me off. What gives him the right? If a cop comes and rips a sign down because it’s illegal to be on city property- that’s one thing (and they have better shit to do than waste time doing this) but when some one man army thinks he knows what’s better for all of us– that’s F’d up.

Parking Regulations are Back - and WORSE

It used to be that half the blocks (from 4th ave to 7th ave) were Mon-Tues street cleaning and the other half were Thurs-Fri. That made for a nice logical sequence where you would park on one set of blocks and then move to the other set of blocks.

Now, however, the 4th ave to 7th ave blocks are Mon-Thurs and the other half are Mon-Tues. So, for some strange reason we’ve got Monday street cleaning along the entire length of the streets. Sunday car moving is going to be a real nightmare now.

Our sushi restaurant of choice is always Geido on Flatbush. The fish is so fresh and the staff are fabulous. However, once in a while when I’m working in the South Slope (south of 9th St.) and want some lunch, I’ll go to the sushi bar at Kiku (near 12th?). Well, Kiku must be upping their game because when I was there today, they were producing plates of food and having a professional photoshoot for them - they were amazing art plates. And then my usual plate came out - a tuna/av/cuke/ roll, tobiko sashimi and 2 pieces of yellowtail sushi and it was so whimsical and good! The guys behind the counter seems liked real pros and it was serious sushi time in there. I’m happy that there seem to be at least 2 really good sushi houses in the Slope. I also noticed that another one is opening on 7th Ave. near 5th St. where another (mediocre) sushi restaurant closed.

The drains have not overflowed; Union Street and Seventh Avenue are not buried under garbage. Nonetheless, the alternate side parking rules are scheduled to go back into effect tomorrow.”

“To offer some perspective, limited access roadways countrywide are swept as little as once a year, and even within the five boroughs, some neighborhoods are not swept at all. Surely much of this city could be kept clean with a weekly or monthly visit from the street sweepers.”

A Summer Writing Intensive

What is Reading-Based Writing?

The basic idea behind reading-based writing is that we read to write and write to read. Because these two disciplines are intertwined, we’re always thinking critically, not just when we’re “studying.” The course will improve students’ writing skills by teaching them how to:

• Comfortably read/write in different genres
• Organize concepts critically
• Develop an organic voice
• Present an effective argument
• Integrate revisions

How it Works

• Classes meet for 2 hours, once per week in July. Instructor will provide all reading materials.
• Students are expected to complete one reading assignment (a story; a poem; an essay) each week and be prepared to discuss it.
• Since the course is run as a workshop, all students will present individual work to be discussed by the class. Additionally, all students will offer written feedback to their peers.
• Instructor will provide individual student evaluations, which include a writing diagnosis.
• The cost of the course is $450.

Using a variety of writing genres, students will learn the techniques of reading-based writing. We will explore:
• Creative writing (fiction, poetry, spoken word)
• Personal narrative/memoir (college essay)
• The five paragraph essay (used on standardized tests like the SAT Writing Test)
• The analytic academic paper (high school, college, and beyond)

About the Instructor
Jill Di Donato holds a BA in English from Barnard College and an MFA in writing from Columbia University. She’s taught “University Writing” to undergrads at Columbia University, developed high school writing programs as a member of Columbia/Artist Teacher, served as a mentor in Columbia University’s Writing Pedagogy Development program for graduate/professional students, and
consulted for the NYC Board of Education on the Creative Curriculum. Her writing can be found in various literary journals and magazines.

Local Artist Opens Home to the Public for a Handmade Shopping Event

On Saturday, May 17, 2008, a local artisan will open her Downtown Brooklyn loft to the public for an intimate shopping event. Thirteen local artists and designers have been invited to showcase their handmade goods and to meet with shoppers for the one-day-only shopping event to take place at 170 Tillary Street #706.

The Brooklyn Homeshow will showcase a variety of locally-made goods including home decor, art and prints, toys, bath and beauty products, jewelry, paper goods, and apparel and accessories. A limited number of goody bags with free samples will be made available to shoppers who pre-register to attend. Refreshments will be served throughout the day.

First debuted in March 2008, the Brooklyn Homeshow is run by a group of sellers from the Brooklyn-based website Etsy.com, which is an online marketplace for handmade goods. The Homeshow is a grassroots extension of the online Etsy marketplace. One of the goals of the Homeshow is to support conscious consumerism by encouraging the purchase of locally-made goods. The show on May 17th will be much like the first Brooklyn Homeshow, with some new sellers participating in order to offer a larger variety of items for sale.

Karin Persan, who is hosting the event, says “It’s really a pleasure to be hosting our second Brooklyn Homeshow. I have been doing larger craft shows for some time now and it’s really nice to be a part of a smaller, more intimate event. It has been a great experience bonding with these extremely talented artists through Etsy.com. We are all very proud to be working together to create this unique show, where you can personally meet with buyers, and have a really fun time!”

Take a GreenWalk! New York City College of Technology, CUNY (City Tech) students will lead GreenWalk, a walking tour of Downtown Brooklyn and DUMBO, on Thursday, May 1, 2008, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. We will explore urban environmental challenges and sustainable solutions. The public is invited to this free tour.

The tour will offer a range of perspectives on environmental concerns in areas immediately surrounding the college. Issues considered will include global warming, the tendency for cities to be warmer than outlying areas (the “Urban Heat Island Effect”) and power generation, while solutions will include recycling and composting, bio-fuel use, green building techniques, absorption of CO2 by trees, and local food consumption.

We will gather between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m. at the southeast corner of Jay Street and Tillary. The walk will proceed down Jay Street into DUMBO and the waterfront, then follow Washington Street up to Cadman Plaza East to the Columbus Park Green Market and conclude at City Tech with a reception from 2 to 2:30 p.m. The rain date is May 9th.

new fitness kickboxing gym in town!

Right near our area, in Carroll Gardens is this kickboxing gym called CKO Kickboxing (562 Court Street near West 9th and Garnet St). They are offering a free trial class to first time guests. I would definitely check it out! I became a member when they opened two weeks ago and i already have noticed a difference in my body! it’s an hour long class on a heavybag and they integrate pushups, squats, jumps, light weights, and abs. Its definitely a full body workout. They offer a kids program too for those parents who are interested!

I lived in Park Slope a year ago for 3 years, there used to be this really cute Latin American/Mexican house wares Store on 5th (and President maybe) It was usually a woman running it. They sold Day of the Dead menageries, handmade textiles, tin ornaments, you get the gist. I know they closed before I moved but I bought beautiful glasses tumblers there with little Day of the Dead skulls etched onto and a signature that looks like Larson? They were a wedding gift for my husband that he adored. Now they are all broken.
Does anyone know the owner or the artist or even the store?

Who is in charge?
A group of local teenagers with the oversight of a group of adults who live in the community. Teenagers decide what will happen; adults set the rules.

What are the rules?
No drugs, alcohol, smoking, or potential weapons (or anyone who appears to be using or about to use them) is allowed inside. Everyone who comes in the door gets a bag check, and a UV-readable hand stamp. Everybody has to check their coats. People who leave cannot re-enter. Good, friendly behavior is expected so that everyone can have a good time. One warning is all you get. Beyond that, have fun.

Who enforces the rules?
A paid security group and a bunch of young adult volunteers.

Who can volunteer?
Responsible adults who are too young to be parents of teenagers are encouraged to volunteer as chaperones during events, which are terrific fun. You get to hear the bands and enjoy the scene while helping younger people have a place of their own

Anyone is welcome to volunteer for setup, cleanup, or for administrative assistance between events.

Hello Slopers,
Our year and a half old Boston Terrier Molly went missing on Friday Oct.19th. She was last seen on south 2nd and Havemeyer in Williamsburg, Brooklyn wearing her burgundy harness. She is apprx. 20lbs, brindle/brown and white with a spot on her head and two more on the upper part of her right paw. She’s also very affectionate and loves humans. Witnesses saw a large dark skinned young man unhook her from her leash while I spent two minutes putting coins in my dryer at the laundromat ( the guilt is immense). The reward for her safe return is $2500, no questions asked. PLEASE PLEASE call 917-583-2626 or 646-249-4539 if you see her anywhere and if possible send us picture messages of the dog you see and where. We are just a couple who loves our dog and are beside ourselves with grief and worry about her.

Club Loco - Performance Space for Teens

In operation since January 2007, Club Loco is a performance space for teen bands open only to youth, ages 14-20.
Supervised by young adult volunteers and a paid security guard, Club Loco operates one Saturday evening per month
during the school year, in a space off Seventh Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn..
Club Loco is sponsored by the Park Slope Civic Council and the Reformed Church in America as a service
to the community. We are a non profit.

Does anyone know why the restaurant Beso (vic. 5th and Union) has stopped serving dinner and changed its hours to something ridiculous like 10am - 3pm? This used to be my favorite little neighborhood Latin place; their plantain chips and avocado salsa were worth flying out from L.A. for. I really hope this is just temporary, and not a step towards closure for the restaurant. Anyone know the deal?

GOODBYE GREENERY? City Revokes Permits for Union Street Planters

“The city, in its infinite wisdom, has revoked the permits we had for the planters along Union Street. They have given us 30 days to remove the concrete planters.”

“The reason they gave was that there must be no obstructions on city property. Since the sidewalks are owned by the city, we must remove the planters that have been there for over 25 years.
So in 30 days, the planters from BHS all the way to Tasti-d-Lite and the bench will be removed. The planters across the street at 92-7th Avenue will also have to be removed, because they were on the same permit.

“So say goodbye to the planters from Bank of America down to NuNu Gallery. If anyone knows how to stop this, please do so. It’s a shame that there will be no plant life allowed on these corners.”

ODD FRAUD: Rash of Fake $20s Surface at Local Stoop Sales

Over the past few weekends, people holding stoop sales have been burned by a guy (or these guys) passing fake bills, according to posters on the Brooklynian message board (see this thread for details: stoop sale counterfeit $ scam– beware)
The first report was by spec* in Prospect Heights: “a few folks had a stoop sale today on the corner of park and vanderbilt. turns out when one of us tried to use some of the $, she learned we had been given two fairly undetectable counterfeit 20$ bills in the sale– and given back the counterfeiter 15-18$ in change on two separate occasions…”

I walked by the Burger Bar today and it looked like they had pulled a bunch of the big pieces of kitchen equipment (grill, grease traps, etc.) out onto the sidewalk. That must have been some health inspection.

My kids and I enjoyed it, the one night we were there. But my little one (who is 9) was just after a milkshake in a GIANT FISHBOWL - the burgers were secondary to her. I was too caught up in her delight at the mutant milkshake to have an objective opinion.

Must’ve been about 40 of ‘em, headed for the park. Sounded like a swarm of angry bees.

Scary, I tells ya.

Also spotted crossing Flatbush - possibly headed to the scooter shop in Gowanus for some kind of rally/throwdown . . .

Ghoulish Inquiry — An Injury on 17th Street?

What was up with that spattery trail of blood on the sidewalk, this past Sunday, along 17th Street, between Fourth and Fifth Avenues? There were also two or three partial bloody shoe prints, and on the opposite side of 17th, a few doors down, there was a bloody black shirt. All we have is this report from simian_sam:

All I know is it happened around 1AM last night. I just got home and there were maybe 8 cop cars flying to the intersection of 17th & 5th. None of which were running their sirens - presumably so as not to alert potential suspect.

There is a busted window in the front of Lola’s bar - and an apt building’s door had the window busted out also. Not sure if this was a stabbing or shooting or if someone just punched through a window and cut themselves. There is a particularly gruesome pool of blood about 50 feet west of 5th ave on 17th on the north side of street.

I keep looking for a story about the incident to show up online somewhere but haven’t seen anything yet.

Postal Idiocy, Park Slope Style

Last week, I received a letter addressed to a woman who has not lived in my building for approximately eight years. I don’t have a forwarding address for her, so I wrote “WRONG ADDRESS — RETURN TO SENDER” in large capital letters on the front of the envelope, with an arrow pointing to the return address.

Knowing that this was not enough to prevent the post office from redelivering this letter to me, I took a Sharpie and crossed out the bar code on the envelope, and I inked over the plastic window on the envelope so my address was completely covered. Then I took it to the Van Brunt post office and dropped it in a mailbox there.

The letter was redelivered to me today. The post office had actually removed the inked-over plastic window to uncover the address. Then they put a new bar code sticker on the envelope. So here it is again.

What the hell? Why are they so stupid? Why were they so determined to redeliver this letter to a place where it is clearly unwanted?

And meanwhile, letters that are sent addressed to me, at my correct address, at a house that has been standing here for 100+ years, get returned to the sender marked “no such address”? Why why why?

Next time they’re grilling, grab a nice bottle of red wine, ring their doorbell, and get to know them. Life is too short to spend it being cranky.
