  1. I lived on 22nd between 6 & 7. I went to PS 10, IS 88 onto John Jay.
I remember Germains. Upstairs in the winter with Santa Claus and the summer with the slot cars.

Lenny’s pizza was okay, but I got it free from Luigi’s (both of wish are still in business).

The 5th Ave diner on 5th and 9th.

Smolins bar, Timbo’s, Charlie Browns, there have been a few. Though Farrells on ninth ave was my favorite.

Johns Bargain store, Grey Shells, O’Neills card store.
    J. Michaels fruniture.

    Stavenhagens pawn shop.

Avons Movie theather (now a McDonalds on 9th st)

    Larsens bakery.

Jacks Candy Store, Rocco’s Candy store, Steve’s Candy store on 6th Ave with Matties across the street. I remember a dollar would get you an italian bread bag full of penny candy.

I don’t remember trolleys, and I was born well after there was an elevated train above 5th Avenue.

Greenwood Cemetery is a much more pretty place to kill a day than Prospect Park.

I miss eggcreams. I miss Mikes ice cream truck. I miss the king kong ride. I miss Wessons. I miss malt shakes.

Through all the changes of Park Slope, I still love it. Love the Brown Stones. The wooden homes as well. I love the black slate sidewalks. The Ansonia Clock Factory. St. Thomas, St. John the Evangelist, The Greek Bazaar…

    There is way too much…

  5. I grew up on 18th st between 9th and 10th ave. Then in 1972 we moved to Prospect ave between 8th and 9th ave.
I was born in 1963 and lived in brooklyn till 1978.
Playing stick ball at Bishop Ford, playing in the pilgrim laundry while they were tearing it down, greenwood cemetary, prospect park, regina bakery, Joes pizza, Henry’s deli, Dog day Afternoon, Holy name, Sanders, park circle, cascade laundry, and so much more. My Father owned a car service in 1968 and 69 on prospect ave almost at the corner of 9th ave. Franks car service. I live in AZ now, but miss Brooklyn. I still have my accent, I refuse to lose it!

  6. I was born at the Caledonian Hospital on April 10, 1938. My grandfather, Dr. Harry Dunlop delivered me. His office was in the brownstone at 840 President Street and that was my first home. My mother, Barbara Dunlop David was raised in that house and she attended Girls Commercial High School. She graduated in 1930. I have good friends who live on West 6th St and I visit Brooklyn often. Although I have lived in Missouri since 1951, I still consider Brooklyn my home town. I was a Dodger fan until they moved away. I have never had a Brooklyn accent, but I can if I want to.

  7. Wow! Thanks for the memories. Sigh…

    Santa Claus in Germains….
    John’s Bargain Store…

    Was it Ginsberg’s Toy Store on 5th between 14th & 15th?
Necking in the balcony at the Prospect Theater.

Fazio’s Hardware, Rose’s candy store, Donato Plumbing & Heating, Vera’s ice cream parlor, P.A.L. on 8th St, the pet shop 2 doors from the Prospect.
It must be Kismet that I found this site because I’m taking my 2 daughters & two oldest granddaughters to Brooklyn on Columbus day.
Thanx for all those great memories you guys.

  9. I lived next door to Larsen’s (my first job was shoveling the snow of Harry Larsen for 25 cents) in the 60’s and went to Holy Family School on 14th Street. My grandfather was Santa Claus in Germains for 13 years back then. I, myself, worked in Meyers on the corner of 12th Street, then the food counter at Kresge’s early 70’s. I also worked at the Prospect Hall Bingo serving refreshments to all the bingo players. My husband is also from Park Slope and went to Holy Family. He use to work in Blimpies on 8th Street. We both went to John Jay High School. Use to hang at Paulie’s cany store on 5th ave. and 17th street. Went roller skating at Prospect Park rink every Sunday. My mother actually use to take us window shopping on 5th avenue on hot summer night and there were no metal things hanging in front of the store. I remember the record store on 12th street that also sold jewelry – this is where I got my ears pierced when I was 12 (boy did I get in trouble). I use to sing in choir at St. Stan’s on 13th st.between 6 & 7 Avenue. They were really fun times. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

  12. wow, thanks for letting me in on your memories, guys. i was born in paterson, nj in 1951. my adult life has been half in manhattan and half in los angeles. i’m in the middle of a fictionalized memoir and found you because of my research on the 1960 plane crash that affected all of us in so many ways. does anyone know if there has been a book or screenplay treatment written about it? i love park slope, and i thank you for letting me travel along this site…

  13. Germains dept store. they had a slot car race way upstairs in the late 1960’s. i remember 3 or 4 tracks you could race on. I was a little kid but they had midnight racing. i never went to it, but wanted to.

also, one year they had a santa claus at the store, i guess my parents had to pay for me, but santa gave me a willie mays baseball model for a present. very happy memories of those days.

  14. This has brought back so many good times and memories. To Maureen, I was in your class at Holy Family Elementary School. I went to the Ukrainian Church ion 19th between 5th & 6th avenues. Lenny’s still to this day has the best pizza (round) but Joe’s on 14th and 5th avenue has the best sicilian pizza. I also remember Germian’s and the Old Reliable bar on 15th and 6th avenue, which is up the block from where I live. These were the best of times. I have yet to find a chinese restaurant as good and the one on 9th street. I remeber roller skating in the street and playing stick ball. I remember the house of 6th avewnue between 15 & 16 street which all the kids thought was haunted. I remembre my first date was to the movies on 9th ave & 15ht strret and then went to the restaurant, the Park HOuse, next door for one of the best chocolate malts in the world.

Thanks for all of the momories. There is no place like Park Slope!!!!! Now my daughter is married and lives there while I live in Washington D.C If I can only turn back time.

  15. Listen Joe Stropoli.
I stumbled across this board and saw that you must have lived a few doors away from my family. We resided at 378A 5th street. Amazing!
I live in AZ now but miss the noise.
    Best,
    Jim Wilson

There was talk over a decade ago about installing some plaque or the equivilent on the one still empty lot , but as of late 1995 it was still not there – IF I remember correctly .

The SW corner was the space stll empty then .

  18. These comments have opened up Pandoras Box.I grew up on 13th st. bet. 3rd and 4th ave.Prompts beverage was right around the corner.Brandys candy store on 14th.I remember when Holy Family was closing, all the stores on 5th ave made donations Jerry’s Meat Market, Perry Drugs;where my life-long friend Paul worked, The Lucky Buck Bar, Forman’s Hardware, but to no avail. Holy Family still closed, thus sending all kids from the neighborhood to St. Thomas Aquinas on 8th street and 4th ave. Some of my best memories was working at Ricciardi Brothers Pork store on 5th ave bet 17th street and 18th street.Don’t forget Catetne’s on 9th street and 4th ave. In regards to Suzan’s earlier comment the name of the movie house on 9th ave and 15th street the name was then The Sanders which is now the Pavillion. I want to end on this note, who remembers the Sneaker Factory????

  19. to anthony….are you kidding me guy..who do you think yoou are ..your a phycho…beat it… get a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Reading some of these comments has flooded my mind with fondness and excitement. I grew up on 13th street between 3rd and 4th avenue. Prompts beverage was around the corner across from Toms bar and grill. Brandys candy store (who could forget the size of that german shepherd) was on 14th street across from Coins french cleaners. Does anyone remember when Holy Family was closing and donations from stores on 5th avenue such as: Jerry’s meat market, Stavenhagens, Perry drugs, where my lifelong friend Paul worked. However, sadly, the donations were not enough and we had to attend St. Thomas Aquinas on 8th street and 4th avenue. I always promised my mother I would buy her a dress from Aarons. I worked at Ricciardi Bros. pork store on 5th avenue and 17th street right next to White Eagle. In an earlier comment, Suzanne mentioned a movie house on 9th avenue and 15th street. The name of it was the Sanders which is currently the Pavillion. Let’s not forget Neergards drug store, Catenes on 9th street and 4th avenue. Does anyone remember the sneaker factory? I hope you all have as much fun and exciting memories as I have had writing this. Hope to hear from fellow South Brooklynites.

  21. So Anthony, some of your best memories were working at my dad’s store. I had some memories myself. Remember the hot pepper incident that ended up in the emergency room I believe. That comes up from time to time at family gatherings and gives us a good laugh at your expense sorry to say.

I do remember the Sneaker Factory. John took me there on a monthly basis on the way home from work.

Anyway, say “HI” to the family and just to let you know that my daughter is laughing about the peppers now. I just told her the story and she’s old enough to hear the dirty detalils. Now I have to find a picture of you so she can see what you look like.

    BYE

  22. Wow, Rose, you are the last person I ever expected to respond to my comments. How the hell are you? How’s the family? I think about the days in the store all the time. You remember Mr. Fanelli, Louie and Kadaffey next door? Do you remember our biggest concerns on Saturdays was what your brother John was making for lunch? I still have not had a meatball like Aunt Mary’s. (I just got hit with a shoe from my wife) ha ha ha. Please send my regards to all of your family and stay away from the hot peppers stuffed with alleige (anchovies). Keep the comments coming.

  23. The neighborhood is still great. I grew up on 18th St. between 10th and 11th Ave in the 50′ and 60’s. Remember Jenny the Pollack? I was good friends with her son,Greg Fitzgerald. My uncle Jimmy had a real family oriented grocery store on Windsor Place and 11th Ave across from PS 154. We used to make up grocery orders for the rectory and the brothers. They refused to eat Larsen’s cakes so we had to make a special stop at Ebingers. Remember Erichs laundromat? Remember Bonali’s Italian Ices across from Holy Name Church? I still hang out with Mike Boniello and my cousin Mike–Siggy–and I attend Cyclones games as often as we can. There was a neighborhood reunion a few years ago held at Bishop Ford. Over 1600 people attended. Jimmy Houlihan and the Farrells travel club started it and it was amazing. Let’s hope they do it again…[email protected]

  24. what about einhorns.Igrew up on 21st between 6 and7aves what a glorious timeto grow up in the 50s what about bennys an Idas candystore on 21 an6th they were the parents of my best friend Sally. 26. I grew up on 21 st bet. 4th & 5th ave. Went to St. Johns and ate at Luigis. Lets reminisce. Felixs on 18th st. & 5th , Pops Bazaar on 19th & 5th , Nick the barber on 20th, Johhny Reds grocery and sandwich shop(chickie made the best sandwiches..man i miss that) Mikes Bakery then there was another small sandwich shop before Luigis called Oscars i believe. Toddos bar on 20th st was mentioned but deserves mentioning again. Luigis pizzeria D’Amicos where ya got the BEST lemon ices, there was Dannys meat market near one corner on 21st  and Mikes meat market near the other corner on 22nd st. in between that was the St. Annas club where the  gentlemen in the neighborhood hung out and played cards. Across the street was Roccos where most of the neighborhood kids hung out. The ‘bottle gang’ occupied the corner of 21st st. I’m not sure but i think Rocco gave em that name amongst many other things he called em(including FRIENDS). If you remember Rocco you know what im talkin about. I’ve put this page in Favs and i’ll be checkin in from time to time adding things as i remember them. I’m remembering more as i’m typin but i’ll wait. Hope ya enjoy the memories and keep addin to em. Skelsies anyone ??

  27. I don’t know how I stumbled on this site; but it was wonderful reminiscing. Germains was MY store. The Santa at Germains was the REAL Santa, all the others were fakes. I lived right near Holy Name church on Prospect Ave. Does anyone remember Clark’s candy store and all the penny candy? 25cents could buy you a whole bag full. Stick ball was my game and I must have had a thousand Spaldeens over the years. I remember the whipped cream birthday cakes you could buy at a bakery (don’t remember the name) on 5th avenue and about 20th Street. Remember Ebingers? I remember the Charlotte Russes and the thick malts and Sanders and the PP zoo and sledding as a little kid on Sugar Bowl Hill in P.P. and the P.A.L. on 17th Street in the summers/ I went back to Brooklyn recently and the hill was barely an incline. Was it that way then? Also took a picture of the hill at the 9th Street entrance to the park where we used to skate down into the bandstand. I used to think that hill was the size of Pike’s Peak. I laughed when I saw it. Remember Suicide Hill and sledding? Does anyone remember the chow mein sandwiches you could buy at the Woolworths on 5th and 9th? I loved the knishes you could buy all along5th avenue. I’ve lived in California since I was about 15, but Brooklyn is HOME. I’m doing a scrapbook of my life right now and have been going on line to find pictures of the things we used to do. What a life it was!! Thanks for reminding me of so many good times it brought back many good memories.

  28. I grew up on 21st bet. 4th and 5th ave. I went to St. John’s, graduating in 1967. I remember Mike’s candy store with Rocco behind the counter, the other candy store on 20th and 5th that sold penny candy. Jimmy and Shirley’s store on 21st street, d’amico’s where you could get a ten cent lemon ice, now they cost 1.25! Germain’s, meyer’s berkerley’s dress shop, the stocking store, pop’s. I could go on and on. So many great memories growing up in the 60’s.

  29. Hey Margaret, I’m Jimmy and Shirleys youngest child. I had forgotten about Roccos dad Mike. Jack the barber was on 20th & 5th and Nick was between 21st & 22nd. I remember playing kick the can, cocolevio and a game called hide the belt, when i explain THAT games rules to people they look at me in amazement. Does anyone remember that game or some others played as a kid? I would like to read about other peoples memories of THOSE games and more.

  30. I remember that game. As I recall, we called it “caught-caught ring-o-levio”, and the bases were the cellar covers. My kids thought I was screwy when I tried to teach it to them in California and had no idea what cellar covers were! Do you all remember dressing up for Thanksgiving and going begging? Or at Halloween dressing up in old clothes and filling a sock with flour, hitting each other with it, and screaming out “Halloween”> What was the name of the bakery on 5th Avenue around 18 to 20th streets where you could buy those delicious whipped cream cakes? Is it still there?

  31. Grew up across the street from the lot on Windsor place that is now a bunch of Condos. Our building was the corner 310 corner of Windsor and Terrace. PS 154 and the Sprinklers,I remember when Bohack became Keyfood and my Grandma hated the price changes and removal of the Pickle Barrels. Bonallis for ice cream,Holy Name to Church,The Good Humor Man,Freezer Fresh and Mr Sofftee,Junky Joe and sitting on the stoop with all the neighbors at night. Sleigh riding in Prospect Park,The Ingersoll Library,Going to Germains to see Santa!, Riding the bus to 5th Avenue too go shopping. Seppies toy store was always such a treat. Ninth Avenue to do laundry and visit with friends. Sitting on the Parkside eating italian ice, riding the bus to Coney Island. Black and White Cookies from the Bakery on Ninth Avenue.

I remember standing on the Grates at the Dry cleaners on Sherman Street, My Grandma would yell at us somedays and others she would have us race on up there to do it. 🙂 The Chinese Laundry across from Bohack where my friend Helen lived. Her house was always full of family and babies and happy sounds. I was born in 66 and cant imagine what my life would be without the neighborhood to raise me.

  32. Hi Michael. Wow what a small world! Knew your sister Josie. We sure had a great time, growing up on that block! Do you remember Mike the ice cream man. He came twice a day. Most of the ice cream cost a dime! I remember playing running bases, where the cellar covers were bases. We would hit the ball against the wall and run. We also played Kings against the wall of the soda factory, which just happened to be next to my apartment. I do remember kids filling their socks with flour on Halloween, though I never did. As to the name of the bakery on 5th Avenue, I can’t recall. I only remember there was a little Jewish bakery on 18th Street (I think) that sold breads, buns and probably cakes. My family would go there after Sunday mass and buy buns. That bakery is long gone from the neighborhood.

  33. Hi, grew up on 8th Street, between 5 and 6th Ave. also grew up on 11th Street, between 2nd and 3rd ave.
Boy do I remember our neighborhood- 9th street brings back memories, the United Cigar Store, Dee Dee Donuts ( donuts cost $1.00 each in Dunkin Donuts today when they cost cents then… Someone mentioned a luggage store on 11th street, It was called Harris’s…I loved that store. My family names are the Whites on 8th street and my mom married a Folsom.
I have 2 brothers Frank (Skippy) Roy, 2 sisters Janet and Ruthann. I love “Our Brooklyn. Its not the same today.
I am married to Paul Perciballi from 16th Street, between 5 and 6th ave, his brothers are Tommy, Louie, Sister Mary, Carol and Tony.
    Love to all you brooklynites.

  34. I remember a bakery between 16th st and Prospect ave on the same side as Lennys pizzaria, i believe it was Reginas bakery. There was also another one between 17th and 18th sts on the other side of the street next to a dentists office and i cant remember the name, a lil help over here. Th ere was a macaroni store between 18th and 19th st i believe was called Morisis. Still havent heard anything that game i mentioned earlier called ‘hide the belt’.

  35. I don’t remember “hide the belt” game; it was probably one you guys made up (ha). Doesn’t anyone remember dressing up and “begging” on Thanksgiving, while the Mom’s made Thanksgiving dinner? I wonder if the kids still get all dressed up on Easter Sunday?

  36. I dont remember the Thanksgiving begging but i remember the socks being filled not with flour but chalk sticks and then throwing em under the tire of a 5th ave bus to crush the chalk so when you hit someone with it it left a powdery mess.

  37. How many remember of us enjoying getting wet in your local johnny pumps? We had many a happy, and wet time getting cooled off on a hot summer day. Our johnny pump had a sprinkler cap on it. Cars would stop under it for a minute or two to wash off and cool off there cars.

  38. Yep, we used either flour or chalk. We would also use the sticks of chalk whole and write on the backs of the unsuspecting! I also remember the fire hydrants; that was fun. What memories!! My son-in-law comes from the sticks of Nevada; he cannot even imagine why I would think the things we did in the city were fun! Can you imagine? I figure I led an enchanted life in Brooklyn; he laughs at me. Those really were the times!

  39. wow I havent heard the word Jonnie Pump in 40 years, graduated St.Johns in 1960 I remember begging on Thanksgiving Grew up on 21st, bet. 6 an 7ave.Went to hamilton h. s. 61to 64 Then Military.Wound up in tampa Fla.Became LINEMAN for tampa electric co. for 30 yrs.I will always treasure my childhood days on and around 21 street.

  40. Hello, I graduated from St. John the Evangelist in 1971. I worked at Dee and Dee and I remember the hot dog man. He was foreign, I remember that, but he was so nice. I think I went to Jeans ? candy story on 23rd and 5th. Pizza at Mike’s bakery was so good. I went to Atlas bank. There was a VFW club on my block and people would rent it out to have parties (I had my baby shower there). I remember one Christmas Eve there was a terrible accident outside of Germains and a whole family got run down by a car. Margaret, I remember the the johhny pumps and the car washes, haha. Many great memories in Park Slope.

  41. Yes Maria it was Jeans on the corner of 23rd and 5th and Mikes Bakery had great pizza but what i enjoyed most was the Italian bread, lard bread and cheese breads they made. Playing in the Johnny pump was very popular still in the 70’s but when we opened em there were no sprinkler caps on em. We used a can cut open on both ends to guide the water where we wanted it to go. Googling the words Johnny pump is what led me to this site a few weeks back. Thanks for sharing some of your memories with me. It’s priceless

  43. Hello JOE STROPOLI,

Guess who’s photo I am looking at, above mine, in the “Prospect”
    June 1957 yearbook?
It took about half an hour to locate it, but
worth every minute, great fun to see everyone.

If you would like a copy of the page with your picture, send
    message to [email protected]

Just happened by and fell into the past as I read so many great
messages. Not finished yet, but need more time to tend to this
    new-found delight–probably this weekend.
    (Vera’s was my favorite!)

    Cheers!

  46. Wow, what a flood of wonderful memories just rushed through my brain. I grew up on 22nd St between 4th and 5th Aves. Went to PS 172, IS 88 and graduated from John Jay HS in 1973. Has anyone watched Big Daddy with Adam Sandler? St John’s School is used in that movie and so is Luigi’s Pizza. Thanks for the memories.

  47. I grew up on 22nd St. Btwn. 4th & 5th ave. I remember Jeans candy store on 23rd st and 5th ave and getting egg creams and pretzel sticks and penny candies.. I remember Mikes Ice Cream Truck ( I secretly wanted him to be my uncle). I went to St. Johns on 21st St. and to John Jay H.S. ( both gone now). I remember going to Germains to see Santa (still have photos). I loved Luigi’s pizza which I still frequent when in town. I lived all over but I still think that Brooklyn in the 60’s and 70’s was the place to live. Stoop ball and Johnny pumps in the summer, King Kong and The Whip Rides and the best block parties ever.

  48. This is to Barb Dunman: you must have lived really close to me. Is Windsor the street that runs behind Holy Name? The one where the school playyard was? If so, I lived on Prospect Avenue across the street a ways from the Street where you lived. We used to make forts out of snow and load them up with thousands of snowballs. When someone yelled out go, we’d pitch them at each other. We’d play that right there on Prospect Avenue and sometimes in the playground. I remember when Prospect Avenue was still cobblestones, when I was a really little kid. I also remember playing in that vacant lot and getting a rusty nail in my foot — winding up in the hospital with blood poisoning. I remember the Italian ices on 9th Avenue and the pizzas!! My brothers and sisters all went to PS 154 before I was born; I went to a Christian School though on Washington Avenue. I remember sitting on the stoop with all the neighbors on summer evenings; someone would invariably go in their apartment and come out with some delicious food which we all shared. Then the kids would catch lightening bugs in jars, or play red light, green light. What great memories.

  49. To: audrey de Oliveira

Audrey, I grew up on the same exact street as you and I also attended St. John the Evangelist. What year did you graduate?

  50. I graduated St Johns in 1977. I lived in the only house on the street that had an actual garden. My brother was Dwight and my sister is Josenette or known as Jose.
