  1. Terry, Yes, Rachel was married to Raymond — their sons’ names were Ronny and Raymond Jr.

Santina, Paulette Rittenhouse is my sister-in-law. She’s living in Florida now.

Marie C., I’m glad someone else remembered the ice cream parlor. If it was strictly an ice cream place before 1959, then I had to be pretty young (around 5 or 6), but I do remember going with my Dad.

I think I remember the explosion down on 2nd avenue, but I’m not sure. What year was it? There was also a very big fire in that same area that lit up the night sky.

Didn’t know the story of the boy drowning and that being the reason St. Rocco’s Youth Center was built.

It’s great to hear all these stories and learning more about the neighborhood.

  2. Terry, My friends and I use to go to the Grid Iron every week. we loved The Beaten Path. I remember going with Pat Meenan, Toni Bove and Jean Barresse to see Funny Girl. When the movie was over We’d look at each other and sing.. Celebrate, Celebrate dance to the music… that’s it we had to get our fix. We went to the Grid Iron, needed our fix of The Beaten Path. No matter where we went first we always wound up at the Grid Iron.
I Was there last Sunday for Brunch @ my niece’s baby shower. Is now Cafe Remy. I can still see the old set-up. Santina

  3. I remember when the dock blew up, our windows all broke. My mother grabbing my hand and running down to 3rd Ave looking for my brother Jack. I remember being so scared.

I also remember being around ten years old on a very windy day, being pushed all the way to school by the wind. It was so bad I clung on to poles and gates on the way up to 5th Ave.. lol.

Does anyone remember the musicians that use to go block to block and play and people use to give money.

How about the Aqualina and Givel man?

    Santina

  4. Hi. Marie.Yes I remember that big explosion. I was still In St. Johns My older sister had a picture of the block party on 21 street after ww11 you could see her hanging on the Lampost. Long Time Ago. Michael.

  5. Hi,

Lucille, I now live in Manhattan-Peter-Cooper / Stuyvesant Town. It’s right off the FDR Drive and where the rents have skyrocketted and people are loosing their apartments.

Santina E is my younger sister who hooked me on to this. She is 8 years younger than me, so we have different memories and friends. Hi Santina.

Does anyone remember the pastry shop on 20th Street and 4th Avenue. What a great place. We would get great ices there in the summer. Back then, 21 st btwn 3rd & 4th was closed the summer months and made a “play street”. Young volunteers would come in and teach us games in the afternoons they would put on the hydrants and we would cool off — and “get washed”.
Many homes and apartments at that time only had bath tubs on certain floors — so we didn’t bathe everyday like we do now. Most of the apartments had bathtubs with squares of wood (the size of a door) over them. Bathing was done only on Fridays and special holidays and occasions. Can you imagine that??????
How did we live like that? I had memories of being in the dark alot.
There were many air raid drills — and although there were very few lights in the home and apartments we had to turn them all off and pull down the shades. We would then listen to the radio. These drills were even done in the schools. We were all given a name tag in case we were killed or displaced during a real raid. We were taught to get under our desks and cover our heads with our hands.

I am at work —- more later.

    Marie

  6. SANTINA,

THEY CHANGED THE GRID IRON’S NAME AGAIN I THOUGH IT WAS STILL BENTLEY’S. I STILL GO TO THIRD AVENUE TO EAT. HAVE YOU SEEN SOUTH BKLYN LATELY WITH ALL THE RESTAURANTS. SIXTH AVENUE WHERE I USED TO PLAY, ALL THOSE RESTAURANTS. WE PROBABLY DANCED AT THE GRID IRON AT THE SAME TIME. I USED TO GO WITH FRANNY BRUNO FROM 20TH STREET RIGHT OFF OF 5TH AVENEU, MY COUSIN CAROL MIELE, GRACE COEN, NANCY SAVARESE SOMETIMES WOULD COME I THINK, JUDY OCCHIOGROSSO. CAROL AND I MET OUR HUSBANDS THERE. ACTUALLY I REUNITED WITH DAVID SHERMAN FROM ST. JOHN’S THERE AND MARRIED HIM WE LOOKED SO FORWARD EVERY WEEK AFTER WORKING TO GO TO THE GRID AND DANCE. WE MADE SUCH GOOD FRIENDS THERE. I THINK THEY ALL ARE STILL INVOLVED WITH MUSIC. I KNOW RALPHIE MARSELLA IS. (the beaten path that is) I HAVE BEEN ON THIS SITE SO MUCH MY LAP TOP IS DEAD THANK GOD MY SON IS HOME FROM COLLEGE AND I CAN USE HIS. LOL TERRY

  7. MARIE C.,

I DO REMEMBER HAVING TO GO UNDER MY DESK IN ST. JOHNS. I REMEMBER BEING SO FRIGHTENED. I USED TO THINK SOMETHING WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AND THEY WOULD TAKE US AWAY AND WE NEVER WOULD SEE OUR FAMILY AGAIN.. TERRY

  8. HEY ALL YOU ST. JOHN’S KIDS,

REMEMBER MISS LOGAMESSINA THE ORGANIST. AS A KID I USED TO WONDER HOW SHE GOT UP THOSE NARROW STAIRS TO SING IN CHURCH. I THINK SHE WAS MSGNR SALA’S COUSIN. HOW ABOUT OUR ART TEACHER MISS WINAMORE THAT CAME TO OUR CLASSROOM AND WOULD TEACH US TO DRAW. I STILL CAN DRAW A PRETTY COOL TREE AND HOUSES…..TERRY

  9. Does anyone remember the Buster Brown kids shoe store on 5th Avenue? This is really dating me, but do you remember you could put your feet in the x-ray machine and tell if the shoes fit right? We used to put our feet in there and the bones would show up green. Now they know how bad that is for you, but back then we used to play with it. They would give you a comic book and a helium balloon if your mother bought a pair of shoes.

  10. Hi Cousin Michael
How’s everyone send my regards. Judy is getting her computer fixed she she cant’ wait to started chatting on this site.

  11. Michael Michel

  12. Hey to camille green (liguori) and Terry,

Camille-how are you and your beautiful daughter? Hope all is well with you. I am Santina’s sister. Where are you living now? I have two children Francesca and Michael. Fran is expecting 6/21 – Mike and his wife have a boy 4 yrs and girl 2 yrs. __________

    Terry,

The Grid Iron is now Remy’s Cafe – Buffet with drinks under $25.00. Saturdays and Sundays. Great place. I think from Thurs to Sun Nights there is Latin music and dancing. Eddie is the new owner. If you go before 11:00 PM you do not pay to enter.

Yes, I remember MISS LOGAMESSINA THE ORGANIST. She sang at my wedding. I haven’t thought about MISS WINAMORE in years. Wow!!
Yes, I also know how to draw a house and trees HEHE.

Does anyone remember: A small narrow bakery between D’amicos Pastry shop and the store next door. When you walked into the bakery to buy bread the floor sloped down as though it was dropping 5 feet. As a kid it really impressed me.

Also – there was a Pool Room on 21st near 4th. My brother lived in there.
And then there was a small grocery store in the middle of 21st 4th & 5th. I cannot remember her name – nice lady owned it — anyone remember her.

    Marie

  13. Terry,

The Catalanos are my distant cousins.
Their grandfather Benny who owned the Mayfair Bar on 22nd and 4th was my mothers first cousin.
His grandchildren were Elena and Benny – they had a younger brother – cannot remember his name.
We were also counsins with the DeLeos who owned the Barbar shop on 4th 21st & 22nd and the Rizzo’s from 21st & 3rd Ave. All were my grandfather and grandma’s brothers or sisters.
Also my dad sailed here from Italy with Todo Marino who owned the Bar on 22nd and 5th. They were good friends.
    Marie

  14. marie,

I remember the bakery with the slope. On the sides were windows and those italian breads withh the pepper in them would be in th windows. My dad’s first store was upstairs for a short time in the 50’s. He sold toys. He opened his other store of 5th next to the fruite market on one side and the grocery store that big Jack owned. My Dad was the T.V,\. man for the neighborhood while my mom watched the store. It was Michaels Lamp and Gift Shop. My Grandpa would sit outside on a chair with his cap on always and sit backwards on his chair.

The Catalano’s is that my friend Richie and Jimmy’s family. They lived on 22nd street between 4th and 5th. I knew Rizzo’s from 21st street. Anthony was my age 57 and he had a younger brother. his mom and dad would probably be in their 70’s or 80’s. Toddo Marino, his entire family lived across the street from me in the 50’s,60’s 70’s or until they died. His sister Katie who never got married and would always sit on her stoop. We could never play near her house it was spotless. TERRY

  15. Hi Sis, Not the Catalano’s, the Calandrino’s were our cousins you wrote too fast.
the Bakery with the slope was the Bread Store.

    Santina

  16. Hi Terry I think the Grid Iron was 3 different names after it was the Grid. TJ Bentley’s was just before Cafe Remy. I’m surprised I never saw you there. I don’t remember ever seeing Richie Catalano there when I was there. I was there in late 69- Early 70. Santina

  17. Terry and Santina,

That’s so funny Santina. You are right! I meant the Calandrinos. It’s hard writing while at work. People keep bothering me to do work! TEE HEE

And yes that Bakery with slope was a bread store.

I have sent the dailyslope to Chickie. Her memory surpasses mine.
    Hope she writes.
    Marie

  20. Marie C. – the pool room on 21st street was Longo’s. It was later Casa Storta Restaurant. The grocery store was Jimmy’s and Shirley’s. There was also a Longo’s bar on the block.

You mentioned the Calandrino’s. I think they may be related to my sister in law. Her name was Roseann Valentino. Her parents were Susie and Tony. She has a sister Carol. They lived on the corner of 22nd and 4th, right near the Mayfair.

Speaking of the Mayfair, years later it was called the Riviera Club. Tito Puento used to play there.

You will see all the old photos of Brooklyn everywhere.

  26. Anyone remember:

Johnny Davilia or Cooky and Dimples Misano?
Or Nina from 21 st below 4th? She lived over the deli. She was such a sweet beautiful little girl who developed brain cancer. I use to go see her and read to her. Poor girl died when she was about 12. When the parades would go around they always lowered the statues so that she could touch them. She is locked in my memory.

Hey Margaret, thanks for remembering the Names of the pool hall and grocery. I cannot remember Laura but I also worked at Seafarers for a while. Actually, I worked there 4 yrs and then they closed the NY office and moved to MD / WA. I still keep in touch with one person from there.

Santina – Michael is the fellow that took in your dog – When he heard I took the dog to ASPCA. He said let’s go get it. And we drove all the way back out there so that he could adopt him. (I forgot the dogs name – Snitzle Switzle Snutz oh boy getting worse) – Have such a bad memory for names.

Brooklynpix is the same as Old Brooklyn photos – linked to each other.

  37. Hi Cousin Terry – Jeanette gave me this site

Born 1939 in Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn
I remember St Anna’s and St Michael’s feasts on 21st Street between 4th and 5th Avenues, where I grew up. The agenl and devil show during the St. Michael’s feast – My grandmother Fina” mussels and scungillis was a BIG hit during the feast. How can you forget that neighborhood and the people. We had a reunion with my brother Donnie’s friends from 21st St about 4 years ago. It was great to see everyone after all those years.
