Cute Mexican Store On 5th Question

Hey,
I lived in Park Slope a year ago for 3 years, there used to be this really cute Latin American/Mexican house wares Store on 5th (and President maybe) It was usually a woman running it. They sold Day of the Dead menageries, handmade textiles, tin ornaments, you get the gist. I know they closed before I moved but I bought beautiful glasses tumblers there with little Day of the Dead skulls etched onto and a signature that looks like Larson? They were a wedding gift for my husband that he adored. Now they are all broken.
Does anyone know the owner or the artist or even the store?
Long shot but I figure it can’t hurt. Thanks so much! My email is [email protected]

Mooney’s Closing; Emergency Happy Hour Planned

EasternPkwyQ writes on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards:

“Mr. Mooney received an eviction notice on October 30th, giving him 30 days to get out. Apparently, the landlord raised the rent from $xxxx to $xxxx and Mooney countered with an offer of $xxxx. The response he received was the eviction notice.”

“Seems pretty extreme – I’m sure they’re hoping that American Apparel’s good buddies at Starbucks or some such place will take over the location. It makes me nauseous.”

“For me, this is a tremendous loss of a lovely neighborhood gathering spot. It may not be the hippest or the most glamorous, but it’s such a great place to meet and talk to your neighbors – people from all backgrounds gather there and actually interact with one another. I have met some wonderful people there who I now count amongst closest friends.”

“The landlord is Lina Fang of Johore Realty – the same person (or at least so I hear) that has evicted Royal Video. I don’t know what else they own, but I certainly plan to boycott whatever takes over these leases and I hope others will do the same. This isn’t Manhattan and we live here because it’s not Manhattan and we want local business owners who actually contribute to – and care about – the neighborhood and the people in it. Mooney’s does that and this is a tremendous loss to Prospect Heights and Park Slope.” Read more on this thread: Mooney’s Evicted! (Brooklynian.com)

LOST DOG

Hello Slopers,
Our year and a half old Boston Terrier Molly went missing on Friday Oct.19th. She was last seen on south 2nd and Havemeyer in Williamsburg, Brooklyn wearing her burgundy harness. She is apprx. 20lbs, brindle/brown and white with a spot on her head and two more on the upper part of her right paw. She’s also very affectionate and loves humans. Witnesses saw a large dark skinned young man unhook her from her leash while I spent two minutes putting coins in my dryer at the laundromat ( the guilt is immense). The reward for her safe return is $2500, no questions asked. PLEASE PLEASE call 917-583-2626 or 646-249-4539 if you see her anywhere and if possible send us picture messages of the dog you see and where. We are just a couple who loves our dog and are beside ourselves with grief and worry about her.
Thanks so much,

Club Loco – Performance Space for Teens

In operation since January 2007, Club Loco is a performance space for teen bands open only to youth, ages 14-20.
Supervised by young adult volunteers and a paid security guard, Club Loco operates one Saturday evening per month
during the school year, in a space off Seventh Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn..
Club Loco is sponsored by the Park Slope Civic Council and the Reformed Church in America as a service
to the community. We are a non profit.

Our next event is October 20th, 2007.
Click here for the poster for this event.

We are looking for additional publicity, volunteers AND donations to keep the space open and available to teenagers…

We’d be interested in having local businesses sponsor the club — it would only cost $350 to sponsor a single show date as the space
is donated and costs are relatively low.

This is a great opportunity for a business to get involved at the ground level with a local project which supports the artistic growth of
our own teens!

Please contact me at the attached email address with any leads, questions, suggestions …

Does anyone know why the restaurant Beso (vic. 5th and Union) has stopped serving dinner and changed its hours to something ridiculous like 10am – 3pm? This used to be my favorite little neighborhood Latin place; their plantain chips and avocado salsa were worth flying out from L.A. for. I really hope this is just temporary, and not a step towards closure for the restaurant. Anyone know the deal?

GOODBYE GREENERY? City Revokes Permits for Union Street Planters

According to nkotsonis, posting on the Park Slope Forum | DailySlope.com Message Boards:

“The city, in its infinite wisdom, has revoked the permits we had for the planters along Union Street. They have given us 30 days to remove the concrete planters.”

“The reason they gave was that there must be no obstructions on city property. Since the sidewalks are owned by the city, we must remove the planters that have been there for over 25 years.
So in 30 days, the planters from BHS all the way to Tasti-d-Lite and the bench will be removed. The planters across the street at 92-7th Avenue will also have to be removed, because they were on the same permit.

“So say goodbye to the planters from Bank of America down to NuNu Gallery. If anyone knows how to stop this, please do so. It’s a shame that there will be no plant life allowed on these corners.”

ODD FRAUD: Rash of Fake $20s Surface at Local Stoop Sales

Over the past few weekends, people holding stoop sales have been burned by a guy (or these guys) passing fake bills, according to posters on the Brooklynian message board (see this thread for details: stoop sale counterfeit $ scam– beware)
The first report was by spec* in Prospect Heights: “a few folks had a stoop sale today on the corner of park and vanderbilt. turns out when one of us tried to use some of the $, she learned we had been given two fairly undetectable counterfeit 20$ bills in the sale– and given back the counterfeiter 15-18$ in change on two separate occasions…”

I walked by the Burger Bar today and it looked like they had pulled a bunch of the big pieces of kitchen equipment (grill, grease traps, etc.) out onto the sidewalk. That must have been some health inspection.

How is the food, anyway?

My kids and I enjoyed it, the one night we were there. But my little one (who is 9) was just after a milkshake in a GIANT FISHBOWL – the burgers were secondary to her. I was too caught up in her delight at the mutant milkshake to have an objective opinion.

Moped Gangs in Park Slope

Was walking up 9th Street today when a freakin’ MOPED GANG came up the street.

Must’ve been about 40 of ’em, headed for the park. Sounded like a swarm of angry bees.

Scary, I tells ya.

Also spotted crossing Flatbush – possibly headed to the scooter shop in Gowanus for some kind of rally/throwdown . . .

Ghoulish Inquiry — An Injury on 17th Street?

What was up with that spattery trail of blood on the sidewalk, this past Sunday, along 17th Street, between Fourth and Fifth Avenues? There were also two or three partial bloody shoe prints, and on the opposite side of 17th, a few doors down, there was a bloody black shirt. All we have is this report from simian_sam:

All I know is it happened around 1AM last night. I just got home and there were maybe 8 cop cars flying to the intersection of 17th & 5th. None of which were running their sirens – presumably so as not to alert potential suspect.

There is a busted window in the front of Lola’s bar – and an apt building’s door had the window busted out also. Not sure if this was a stabbing or shooting or if someone just punched through a window and cut themselves. There is a particularly gruesome pool of blood about 50 feet west of 5th ave on 17th on the north side of street.

I keep looking for a story about the incident to show up online somewhere but haven’t seen anything yet.

Last week, I received a letter addressed to a woman who has not lived in my building for approximately eight years. I don’t have a forwarding address for her, so I wrote “WRONG ADDRESS — RETURN TO SENDER” in large capital letters on the front of the envelope, with an arrow pointing to the return address.

Knowing that this was not enough to prevent the post office from redelivering this letter to me, I took a Sharpie and crossed out the bar code on the envelope, and I inked over the plastic window on the envelope so my address was completely covered. Then I took it to the Van Brunt post office and dropped it in a mailbox there.

The letter was redelivered to me today. The post office had actually removed the inked-over plastic window to uncover the address. Then they put a new bar code sticker on the envelope. So here it is again.

What the hell? Why are they so stupid? Why were they so determined to redeliver this letter to a place where it is clearly unwanted?

And meanwhile, letters that are sent addressed to me, at my correct address, at a house that has been standing here for 100+ years, get returned to the sender marked “no such address”? Why why why?

I went on Friday night. First off, service was excellent: super-nice waiters, told us to order some stuff, sit as long as we liked, order more, whatever. Definitely liked the vibe and friendliness of the place. Good beer.

Food was a bit hit-or-miss, though. I agree with some people about the very-small portions/not-so-small prices of some things, particularly the items over $10. If you order enough of those to feel full you’re really getting into a pretty-expensive-meal zone. I guess you have to try to fill up a bit on the cheaper things, but that’s no fun. (By the way, I’m a small woman, not some giant-appetited lumberjack-type.)

Case-in-point: delicious (if a little mild) baby back ribs, falling off the bone, but $12 for 2 tiny ones? I don’t know…

My favorite thing was the breaded mushrooms… Yummy, and kind of intense so you don’t really need a bigger portion. One disappointment: the cheese plate. Not enough bread, and the cheeses didn’t overly impress. But overall i did really enjoy the relaxing experience of the place.. the music, the service, the super-nice chef came out and introduced himself to everyone, asked how we were finding things … Read more (Link)

Small Dog Playgroup in Park Slope

My fiancee and I recently moved to the neighborhood and our very sweet but shy King Charles Spaniel is in need of some socializing! He is 2, neutered and gets along best with other dogs who are quiet (he never barks) but enjoy playing with toys, chasing, etc. We’d love to get him together with a few other dogs with similar “temperaments” so he can become a little more outgoing.

We love taking him to Prospect Park early on weekend mornings, but it is a bit far for us to go every day (we’re on Bergen near 4th). Also, there are so many dogs there it can be overwhelming for him. I don’t know if there are any parks closer to us or another place where dogs can get together.

If anyone has a sweet, calm doggie who wants to make a new friend, let us know!!!!!!

5th Ave Dog Park Nightmare

I had a terrible experience today at the 5th Ave dog run by the Old Stone House. An aggressive truck of a woman with a shepherd mix and an abundance of leisure time stopped me and my dog from entering the park, and by “stopped” I mean physically blocked the entrance, called me a “bitch”, and said that my dog and I would enter “over her dead body.”
I wish that I were joking about this.
It was like walking into an episode of COPS.
Now I’ve dealt with my share of crazy dog people before but this lady was a whole new level of lunatic. She calIed me Dorothy and accused me of being from Kansas. KANSAS!
This would not stand. Rather than face a physical confrontation with this stool sample I called the cops on her after she quite elegantly volunteered to “kick my ass.” The police were nice enough to stop by and let her know that she was neither the boss of the dog park, nor the President of Armenia.
I had unfortunately previously encountered this beastly woman. I warn you Park Slopers to tread carefully because the wicked witch may come for you and your little dogs next.
A few months back our dogs were in the park together with a few others. This woman…let’s just call her Ava Braun was waving a stick in the air to throw. My dog (being a dog) jumped up to get the stick. She was less than a year old at the time and still mastering the command “Down”. Ava yelled out “You had better get your dog off of me. I have a head injury.” Now in hindsight this should have been abundantly clear. However at the time I apologized and pulled my dog back. Then at some point during the course of play our two dogs got into a tussle. Nothing too vicious mind you, no blood or anything, just your average carried away dog scuffle. So Ava pretty much lost her shit on me all while warning me that she may indeed lose said shit. “Get your fucking aggressive dog out of here before I lose it!”
I am sure I asked her not to swear at me and assured her that my dog was not aggressive but had just gotten overly excited as her dog had seemingly also done. This just seemed to make Ava angrier and apparently “we would no like Ava when she angry”. So the pooch and I decided to abandon the park for the time being and pray for a return to a Democratic regime.
That was the last time we had the misfortune of running into Ava until today’s sorry incident. I pray that this will be the last I see of her but I seriously doubt it. Ava has a lot of free time but only so many more summer afternoons left to ruin. The boyfriend will be coming with me to the park from now on just in case she wants to get frisky with me again.
Incidentally my dog came home from the day’s events and viciously licked my feet for a while, ferociously attacked an ice cube, and passed out while I was rubbing her belly. Clearly we are both a menace to society.

Lost Italian Greyhound

Hi all-
If any of you have any information about the following situation
please contact the owner. Her contact information is below.
Andrea

From Gracie’s mom:

We lost our dog on Sunday 7/15/07 in the vicinity of Lenox &
Flatbush, Brooklyn NY. She is an Italian Greyhound, she answers to
the name GRACIE. She is small to medium size, brown top color and
white lower coat.
Gracie is vey shy, afraid of people and noise.

Keeping you informed, I went to Brooklyn this last Sat. & Sun
searching the streets, put up flyers in the areas of 13th st, 7th
and 8th Ave, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. I posted more flyers at the
entrance to the Prospect park. Inside the park, I posted flyers by
the Dog Beach, along the fence leading into the open areas (I was
told that is where dogs can be off leash). I came to see the Park
Officer asking them not to take the flyers down. I learned that I
have to obtain authorization from the park or Fido group in order to
post the flyer. I did called the Park Administrator, Major Grant on
this.

The latest update is the person who found the Italian Greyhound on
7/16/07, named Maria, has already given the found dog to a person
named “Kevin”. Maria knows “Kevin” from her old neighborhood, in
Park Slope, when she was living on 13th st. between 7th & 8th Ave.
She met him again on the morning of 7/16/07, while he was on his way
to Brooklyn college. Kevin helped Maria got the dog out from inside
the church’s fence. Both of them took the dog to the Vet on 1905
Flatbush, Dr. Lanceman. Since Maria already has 2-3 dogs, she can’t
keep the found dog, the agreement was that she will pay for the
service bill and Kevin will take care of the dog. Kevin loves the
dog that Maria found, came back later that day (or the next day) and
took the dog. Maria does not know Kevin’s Last name and did not ask
for Kevin contact number. She did gave Kevin her business card and
said to call her if Kevin and his wife need any help with the dog.

Per Maria, Kevin is still living in the Park Slope, in the area
where Maria used to live (13th st, b/t 7th & 8th Ave.). She believes
that Kevin will bring Gracie to the park, that if I look there, I
will eventually see Kevin. Also per Maria, Kevin is about 30 yrs
old, an African American young man. Kevin sometimes wears a “durag /
bandana” on his head. The day that Kevin and Maria went to the
Flatbush Vet office, they were seen by another young woman, who
brought her dog to see the vet. This woman is Jessica, she is the
one that saw the flyers I posted in the Prospect park and alerted me
that an IG looks just like Gracie was brought in to Dr. Lanceman
office on Monday 7/16/07 at 11:30 AM.

As I might have already mentioned to you, I called the Vet office,
talked to Natasha, who works there to see Gracie picture posted on
www.hellobrooklyn. com, Natasha took one look and said, that’s the
dog. In my heart, I know it’s my beloved Gracie. How else, that 2
identical Italian Greyhound dogs were lost and found a day apart in
the same vicinity, same color, same weight, same sex.

Dr. Lanceman was not very eagerly to help. He confirmed that the dog
that was brought in in the morning of 7/16/07 was an Italian
Greyhound, but he said, he had seen 72 more dogs since, thus he can
not provide anymore details. He doesn’t want to receive anymore
calls about this lost dog. He said I need to talk to Maria on this.
I eventually found where Maria live and came to see her. But I could
not get any other information besides the dog that she found was
given to Kevin, and that she does not have his contact information.

Help me to bring my Gracie home. I thank you with all my heart.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Best Regards,
Theresa

R.I.P. Snooky’s … Buongiorno Elementi

WTGirl writes about Elementi, formerly Snooky’s (Park Slope Forum | DailySlope.com Message Boards): “Just what the neighborhood needs–another upscale restaurant with not so great food. The pretentious name is a problem for me.”

“All the ‘regular’ businesses are leaving. How many expensive dress shops, overpriced kids boutiques, gift shops, not so great restaurants, phone stores, banks does one neighborhood need? I will miss Snookys and the other neighborhood institutions as they pack up and close.”

Another PS forum regular adds: “Another Italian restaurant isn’t sorely needed here… I liked Snooky’s for what it was. Quick inexpensive bar food, they had a nice veggie burger and house salad. It was one of the last PS bars, and it was the place I sent people when they asked me where they could go for a beer. Now I have to send them to 5th Avenue.”

Has anyone eaten there yet? Would be nice to get some actual reviews posted on this thread, which has taken a strange and dramatic turn: Elementi, formerly Snooky’s (Park Slope Forum | DailySlope.com Message Boards)
